In the book I wrote for teens based on my decades as a learning specialist, I wrote:
Sometimes I wish there was a whole class in high school dedicated to simply naming all the little annoying and disappointing mistakes and circumstances that happened that day…Then, maybe we wouldn’t all be walking around thinking that we’re the weird ones who don’t belong because we’re somehow not as bright, competent, or normal as everyone else. We'd sit for 45 minutes, sharing stories [of our mistakes and regrets]. We'd chuckle, pat each other's backs, and exclaim "Oh my God, me too!" We wouldn’t give each other unsolicited advice or judgment. We’d just help each other feel lighter about life. We'd see this stuff happens to the best of us. We might even have a chance of doing a little better the next day because we were learning how to stop beating up on ourselves by seeing how lovely and funny others are when they share their flawed, imperfect lives.
That message wasn't just for teens – it was for all of us. We carry enough heavy stuff around without letting our guilt over our human shortcomings weigh us down too.
So that’s what the Friday To-Do List Confessional is for.

The Friday To Do List Confessional Rules
I'll share mine, you'll share yours, and we'll absolve each other through kind, empathetic responses to each other.
One thing is not allowed: NO ADVICE! Think more "Oh, I totally get that" or "You're doing great!" and less "Have you tried..."

What one thing you didn’t get to this week that you feel bad about?
What is one thing you accomplished that felt meaningful?
Here’s mine:
Only drafted my novel 2 out of the 5 planned days this week. It's the one thing I desperately want to be good at, which makes it harder to prioritize over things people would actually find useful around here like having clean dishes to eat from.
Made therapy appointments! Despite the cost and scheduling commitment that usually puts me off, I did it.
Your turn – come share with us! Let's walk into the weekend with lighter shoulders.
With absolution,
Your Sister Inferior Tricia
p.s. I am obligated to let you know that that book for teens I mentioned is award-winning and you can buy it where all books are sold.
I didn’t get to the three crates of fabric I need to go through and pitch/donate what I’ll never use .
I finished reading The Anxious Generation and now I’m anxious !
Thank you Tricia for this thoughtful advice as always. I'm proud that at The Language Group we connecting with families in a meaningful way to help guide some parents that were looking for both Executive Functioning Coaching and Reading Tutoring. As far as what I did NOT get accomplished? I could have been a little more timely with my own laundry :) and saved some rushing around this morning :)
